The Bird

Today is a mystic day, one of those days that staying at home drinking lots of hot herbal tea and reading a good book is just the right thing to do. However, I feel anxious to go out. Out to anywhere… Maybe a walk on the beach. Can’t decide whether Long beach or Jones beach, they are both so beautiful…with miles of empty white sands for walking and relaxing my senses along with that penetrating endless wind from our feisty Atlantic Ocean.

Or should I just go and have a cup of matzo ball soup at my favorite diner?

And so my friend and I decide going to the diner.

After parking the car and getting our way up the stairs’ where the restaurant entrance is, immediately we noticed this tiny, colorful bird trapped between a heavy, spiky black doormat behind a heavy glass door. He was afraid and screaming for help. With disbelieve my friend and I watched how people before us going in and coming out from the diner ignored completely the screaming little bird.

Quickly, and before the little bird get smashed by the unkind crowd,  my friend held the door steady while carefully I am grabbing the screaming bird with my two hands.

Some people acknowledge our action by looking at us strangely, while others just turned their heads away as if they did not want being part of what was taking place.

Imagine the thoughts that were crossing both my friend’s mind and I.

We pulled aside from the front door so we could give our little bird some love…making sure he was not with some broken legs… toes… checking the wings…feathers are fine and beautiful… His tiny picks are fine…

What was he thinking before he got caught within that ugly doormat!

We laughed.

Surprisingly, and suddenly a force so strong came out from the little bird’s body; he released himself from my hands flying, and whistling his life away!

And so we watched the colorful tiny bird disappeared within the distant clouds…

My friend and I hugged.

Suddenly an old man came out from somewhere and told us, ” You did a good deed today. You did something good.”

He smiled, and then walks away.

What he said went right through my heart. I mean, nothing is a coincidence, isn’t? What if all this scenario was all written before it got at my hands to act upon? What if our ultimate decision for coming to this diner today was more than just having a cup of matzo ball soup?

What if our ultimate destination: outcome was saving the life of that beautiful colorful tiny bird that a bunch of unkind people ignored his cry for help!

Yes, the message is clear, kindness, love, and action always clear our paths, and those of others.
